Fourfold guide
Puzzle aspects
Aspect tags describe the kind of challenge a puzzle offers. Select any aspect tag to return to its meaning here.
Creators can add aspects to describe their intent; player feedback can support additional descriptions. These tags do not determine a puzzle’s difficulty rating or community quality.
Themed
A shared subject, motif, or organizing idea runs across the puzzle.
Use this when the board has a deliberate theme beyond the four individual connections. The theme can shape the clues, the connections, or the overall presentation.
Misdirection
Clues invite tempting interpretations that differ from their intended connections.
Use this when deliberate red herrings, alternate meanings, or overlapping associations are a substantial part of the challenge. The puzzle’s Independent or Interlocking classification still determines whether convincing alternative quartets are fair.
Knowledge requirement
Solving depends on knowledge that may be unfamiliar to a general audience.
Use this for specialist, technical, niche, or other uncommon knowledge that is needed to understand a connection. Add broad, spoiler-safe Wikipedia topics so players can check which subjects are involved before committing.
Topic names remain hidden during play until a player opens Knowledge requirement. Viewing them is free. Read the guidance on choosing knowledge topics.
Pattern-based
Connections depend on recognizing a shared structural, visual, or linguistic pattern.
Use this when noticing the shape or arrangement of the clues is central: for example, repeated letter structures, sound patterns, or a consistent transformation.
Constraint-driven
An extra construction rule deliberately limits how the clues or connections are formed.
Use this for a board built around a meaningful restriction, such as a fixed set of letters, a restricted vocabulary, or parallel clue structures. All Fourfold puzzles have four quartets; this tag describes an additional creative constraint.
Pop culture
The puzzle draws substantially on entertainment, celebrities, or popular media.
Use this when popular culture is a defining feature of the board. If a specific body of knowledge is required, also declare a broad knowledge topic; a pop-culture reference is not automatically familiar to every player.
Other creator descriptions
Older puzzles may carry a creator’s custom aspect tag. These descriptions remain attached to the puzzle, but they are not part of the shared vocabulary above.
Independent and Interlocking describe puzzle structure. Quartet taxonomy describes how individual connections work.
