Create a puzzle people trust

The best puzzles feel surprising in retrospect, but inevitable once solved.

Choose how the puzzle fits together

Fourfold asks every creator to classify a puzzle as Independent or Interlocking. In an Independent puzzle, any quartet with a strong connection should be safe to submit. In an Interlocking puzzle, a player may need to consider the whole board before deciding which four clues belong together.

Neither style is inherently better. Independent construction asks the creator to remove more overlap. Many forms of richer misdirection require an Interlocking puzzle, which needs careful testing so the final answer remains fair. Read the full explanation before choosing.

A useful sample progression

1. 1 Straightforward: synonyms or familiar members of a set.
2. 2 Building: trickier synonyms or a shared property that takes another look.
3. 3 Challenging: an unexpected semantic connection or approachable wordplay.
4. 4 Demanding: wordplay, a transformation, or carefully controlled misdirection.

This is a sample template, not a rule. Advanced boards may be tricky from the first quartet and devilish by the fourth. The numbered order communicates relative intended difficulty; it never restricts the kind of connection.

Audit every clue—and every remainder

Test each clue against every other quartet. Search for plausible fifth members, convincing four-clue decoys, and guesses that would strand an otherwise correct remainder. If misdirection is intentional, the intended solution still needs to be uniquely defensible. Even in an Interlocking puzzle, a careful player who looks ahead must be able to find a no-mistake route through four clean remainders.

Clues appear in all caps by default, and Fourfold checks for duplicates regardless of capitalization. If letter case is part of a connection, use the advanced Preserve capitalization option for that clue.

Develop a broader connection vocabulary

Most connections lean either semantic — meaning does the work — or word-based — spelling, sound, position, or transformation does the work. The best creators build fluency in both and sometimes combine them. Browse the quartet taxonomy for examples, then read Quartet Craft for misdirection, whole-board techniques, and ambitious formats.

Hints and specialist knowledge

A quartet hint should narrow the search without stating the connection. Add topical tags only when success depends on specialist knowledge many players may not have; ordinary subjects and general knowledge do not need them. Topical tags stay hidden until a player asks to reveal them.

Playtest privately, then publish

Keep revising while the puzzle is private. A playtest link lets friends try the latest draft, and signed-in testers can leave private notes. Revoke the link whenever you like.

Publishing locks the clues, quartets, and hints for that version. A later content change creates a new version with a fresh competitive record, while title and approved tag corrections can remain simple edits.
